How HDFC Bank hires, and how to get in: 2026

HDFC Bank lost roughly 49,100 permanent staff in the year to March 2026 and still ended it 3,343 people smaller, which means it hired somewhere near 45,800 people while shrinking. Its own SEBI-mandated report puts the median annual pay of a male employee at ₹6,81,759 and of a female employee at ₹4,81,290, and 77 per cent of its 2,11,178 staff sit in non-supervisory grades. This playbook works through the entry routes the bank has actually published, the pay and attrition figures that sit in its filings rather than on its careers site, and the Reserve Bank of India rules on deferral and clawback that decide what senior staff are allowed to be paid.

HDFC Bank hired somewhere close to 45,800 people in the year to March 2026, and still finished that year with 3,343 fewer people than it started with.

Both halves of that sentence matter, and neither is on the careers site. The bank's Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report puts permanent employee turnover for FY2025-26 at 23.1 per cent. Applied to an average headcount of about 2,12,850, that is roughly 49,100 permanent staff walking out of the door in twelve months. Over the same twelve months the permanent headcount fell from 2,14,521 to 2,11,178. Subtract, and the bank must have taken in somewhere in the region of 45,400 to 46,200 people just to end the year smaller.

You are not competing for growth. You are competing for a replacement seat. HDFC Bank ran roughly fourteen hires for every one net job it added, except that in FY26 it added none at all, so the ratio is not fourteen to one, it is 45,800 hires against a net loss. Almost every vacancy you will ever see at this bank exists because somebody left, not because a new team was funded.

That changes how you should write to them. A hiring manager filling a replacement seat is not looking for potential in the abstract, they are looking for someone who can hold a portfolio, a branch counter or a control process from week one with the least possible handover. Say which desk you can sit at. Name the product, the customer segment and the system. Do not open with what you want to learn.

The second implication is about where in the bank the seats are. Of the 2,11,172 permanent staff the BRSR accounts for by grade, 1,62,769 sit in non-supervisory roles. That is 77 per cent of the bank. The entry doors are wide, and they are almost all at the customer-facing end.
