Alphabet added 11,830 people in the year to 30 June 2026, which makes Google one of the very few large technology employers hiring into a growing establishment rather than a shrinking one, and it makes the published rules about how you apply matter more than any advice about how you interview.

Start with the number, because it changes how you should read everything else. Alphabet employed 198,933 people on 30 June 2026, against 187,103 on 30 June 2025. Every route in that we could verify Google operates

Google runs almost everything through one job board. There is no separate entrance test, no published marks cut-off, and no campus aptitude paper of the kind Indian service companies run. What follows is only what we could confirm from Google's own careers material on 21 September 2026. Where a route is talked about but we could not verify Google's published rules for it, we have left it out rather than describe it from memory.

Direct application to a posted role	Anyone, at any level	The main route. Between about 3,300 and 3,600 open roles were listed on Google's careers site across repeated checks on 21 September 2026, spanning software engineering, data centre operations, sales, trust and safety, programme management, hardware and policy, in dozens of countries. You apply through a Google Careers profile signed in with a Google Account.
Early career, campus	Graduating or recently graduated students	A distinct posting family. The "Software Engineer, Early Career, Campus" posting live on 21 September 2026 listed ten United States sites: Mountain View, Cambridge, Kirkland, Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh, San Bruno, Seattle, San Jose and Sunnyvale. It asks for a bachelor's degree in computer science, a similar technical field, "or equivalent practical experience", and states that in-person interviews are typically required.
Early career, PhD	Doctoral graduates	A separate posting family again. The "Software Engineer, PhD, Early Career, 2026" posting live on 21 September 2026 was for Hyderabad and Bengaluru, asked for a PhD in computer science, electrical engineering or a related technical field, and listed availability to start a full-time position in 2026 as a preferred qualification.
Fixed term contract	Specialists, often in research or design	Google posts some roles explicitly as fixed term, for example a UX engineer role in its DeepMind organisation marked "(Fixed-Term Contract)" on 21 September 2026. These are Google roles with an end date, not agency placements.
The extended workforce	People who work on Google products without being Google employees	Alphabet's own annual report names this group: "The employees of our suppliers and staffing partners, vendors and temporary staff, respectively, and independent contractors who are self-employed, make up our extended workforce." These people are not inside the 198,933.
