Getting a job in the Netherlands, 2026

On 1 January 2026 the €262,000 ceiling on the 30 per cent ruling began applying to everyone, including people who arrived before 2023 and had been exempt. The scheme is still 30 per cent this year and drops to 27 next, but not for everybody. Here are the 2026 salary thresholds, why only an IND recognised sponsor can hire you, and the arithmetic that stops most graduates on the reduced criterion from getting the tax break at all.

The kennismigrant route, the money, and the 30 per cent ruling

In the Netherlands your employer decides whether you can come at all. Only an organisation the IND has already admitted to its register of recognised sponsors may file a highly skilled migrant application, and no amount of qualification on your side substitutes for it.

The salary thresholds that govern 2026

These are gross monthly salaries excluding the 8 per cent holiday allowance. They are indexed every 1 January and hold for the whole calendar year. You must meet the amount that applies on the date the application is filed.

The IND confirmed the same highly skilled migrant and Blue Card figures in its news item of 24 December 2025, "Fees and required amounts for 2026 known". Holiday allowance is explicitly not counted towards the salary criterion.

The reduced criterion is the cheapest legal way into the Dutch labour market, and almost nobody uses it deliberately

€3,122 a month is 47 per cent below the adult threshold. You qualify for it if you apply for the highly skilled migrant permit within three years of the date you graduated in the Netherlands, of your doctoral defence, or of the date your research permit expired. It also applies while you hold an orientation year permit, and to people who meet the orientation year conditions but never actually took that permit.

So the cheapest route into a Dutch job is often to enter as a student or researcher first, and the three year window means you do not have to convert immediately. The window is measured from graduation, not from the end of the orientation year.

What "recognised sponsor" actually costs your employer, and why it changes who will hire you

Recognition is a company level status, not a per hire permission. The IND checks the continuity and solvency of the organisation and the reliability of its directors, and takes up to 90 days to decide.
