Critical Skills permits are the route to Stamp 4, and the thresholds rose in March 2026, so employers hiring from abroad are choosing the candidate who justifies the salary and the process. Step one is the whole game, and it is the part almost everyone under-invests in.

The two permits, the money, and the needs test

Ireland raised every salary threshold on 1 March 2026, not in January, and moved the completion date of its increase roadmap from 2026 out to 2030. If you are working from last year's numbers you are wrong by between €2,600 and €4,900 depending on the permit.

Effective 1 March 2026, per the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment permit pages, the 2025 roadmap review, the press release of 2 December 2025 and Citizens Information (2 March and 2 April 2026). One honest warning: the Department's own summary page for these thresholds renders three of them as €40,909, €36,849 and €49,522. Four official sources against one, so we publish the four, but the conflict is real. If a euro matters to your application, ask the Department which figure governs.

Two graduate thresholds exist for the first time

€36,848 on the Critical Skills route and €34,009 on the General route, both for people who qualified within the previous twelve months. That makes the study in Ireland then convert route materially cheaper for an employer than it has ever been, and it is the strongest single argument for entering through a course rather than directly.

Why the list matters more than anything else

Same country, same work, thirty six months of difference. Whether your occupation sits on the Critical Skills list is the single most consequential fact about an Irish job offer.
