The Blue Card thresholds and the Opportunity Card points system are written down, so eligibility is rarely the problem. Getting an interview is: German employers read a tabular Lebenslauf and expect the application to follow their conventions exactly. Step one is the whole game, and it is the part almost everyone under-invests in.

How a résumé is expected to look in Germany

The German Lebenslauf: tabular, reverse chronological, dated to the month, with a photograph still common though no longer required, and the signature and date at the end. Certificates (Zeugnisse) are attached. Applications go as one PDF: cover letter, CV, certificates.

The Blue Card, the thresholds, and coming without a job

Germany's salary thresholds are not fixed numbers. They are percentages of the pension contribution ceiling, which is reset every year, so a job offer that cleared the line in 2025 may not clear it in 2026. Everything below is the 2026 figure.

Announced by the Federal Ministry of the Interior on 2 December 2025, published in the Federal Gazette on 18 December 2025, and confirmed by the Federal Employment Agency and Make it in Germany (page updated 18 September 2026). Two things people get wrong: the reduced threshold applies for a shortage occupation or for a new entrant, never both stacked; and the reduced route needs the Federal Employment Agency's consent, while the general 50 per cent route does not.

Which occupations count as shortage occupations

The law defines them by international classification group rather than by a list of job titles, which is why the usual internet lists disagree with each other. The groups are 132, 133, 134, 21, 221, 222, 225, 226, 23 and 25.
