FreeAustralia spent 2026 quietly rewriting its own hierarchy. The 2026 to 2027 program adds about fourteen thousand employer sponsored places and cuts regional by nearly nineteen thousand. New South Wales has closed its state nomination for the year and is telling applicants to look elsewhere. If you are planning around points and a state, you are planning around the part of the system that is shrinking.
The practical hierarchy, in order
- Find a sponsoring employer. That is now the dominant route, by design.
- Clear the Specialist Skills income threshold if you possibly can. It is the single biggest processing advantage in the system: a median of 15 days against 4 months.
- Treat subclass 186 Temporary Residence Transition as your permanent residence route, and do not change employers mid clock, because since 29 November 2025 that resets your two years.
